Pouring heart out

Mission: Dangerous Waters (Prologue)
Location: Ready Room

Alex sat behind her desk in her ready room. She commed Vinnie to tell him to call a senior officer’s meeting in the conference room. She wanted to meet with all senior officers.

She needed to compose herself before she will meet with everyone. She knew that bad things happen and the way she was going to run this ship when they do is talk about it. She felt that it was best for the crew morally to be able to talk about these things.

She needed to talk to someone before she talked with the crew so she decided to see if she could contact Alexandria Taylor on the USS Essex. Taylor was one of her best friends and they both went by the name of Alex. Unlike her, Alex was an only child but was a great friend to her and her brothers and sisters.

The comm channel opened to Taylor’s tired face. “Hey Taylor,” said Alex.

“Hi. How is everything going?”

Alex smiled. “I was about to ask you that. You look like crap.”

“Thanks a lot,” said Taylor. “I feel like it. I’m going to talk to the doctor soon to see if he can find out what the deal. Even though I am a doctor, I can’t exactly diagnose myself.”

“I bet,” said Alex. “Do you have an idea what is going on?”

“No. Maybe an imbalance or something like that. I have never felt like this before. I have been sleeping so I know it’s not that I am not sleeping because I have been sleeping.”

“You tell me what is going on. I hate for you to be falling apart. You are a great friend.”

“Thank you. You too. Is there a reason why you contacted me.”

“Yeah, but I think you should get some rest. My problems are not that important than you.”

“It’s okay. Just tell me what it is that you want,” said Taylor.

“I just wanted to talk to you. We just finished our first mission,” said Alex. “I know we can’t win everything but we lost one. A ferengi.”

“Yeah, you are right. I know you just want to bend my ear,” said Taylor.

“Yes. I don’t know. I don’t know how to explain it. I understand loss and we as doctors have been faced with that. You as an XO have seen a lot too.”

“And I miss it,” said Taylor.

“You’ll get back to center chair before you know it,” said Alex.

“I know. So what are you doing about the loss other than the obvious?”

“I set up a meeting with the senior staff. I think it’s a great thing to do with them every time there is a loss so that they can talk about it. I have to make them know that it was not their fault.”

“Being a doctor does have its advantages,” said Taylor. “It makes you more understanding of the crew. Just talk to them with your heart and I think you will be okay.”

“Yeah you are right,” said Alex. “Thank you. You helped.”

“I’m glad. I wish I was there.”

They ended the comm channel.

Alex then went to the mess hall and talked to the chef to make some food up for the senior staff and to bring the food up as soon as she calls for him to bring it up. He obliged and then Alex headed to the conference room where the senior staff was starting to shuffle in.
